THE SAVE Centennial Pool cam-
paign was thrown a curve ball
yesterday with the news the pool
will be demolished to make way
for a playground.
The news has angered Cam-
paign spokesperson Simone Pear-
son as the group had been cam-
paigning for almost a year to save
Realising the council was
unlikely to repair the pool, they
had hoped the pool could become
part of the recovery blueprint,
However, Canterbury Earth-
quake Recovery Authority chief
executive Roger Sutton yesterday
confirmed the pool would go.
While many people have voiced
their support to keeping that pool,
the Christchurch Central Devel-
opment Unit has identified an
opportunity for a new aquatic cen-
tre called the Metro Sports
Facility, he said.
Keeping two aquatic centres in
the central city is not part of the

Centennial was not repaired.
The council had decided in June
to investigate the cost of tempor-
arily repairing the pool ($9 mil-
lion) but a report going before
council tomorrow estimated it
would take at least 18 months
before it was operational.
This timeline meant the pool
would not operational until at
least April 2014, almost a year
after CERA planned to begin dev-
eloping the Frame.
It s obvious repair is now a no
go because the timeline does not
work, Ms Pearson said. Quite
clearly there is no point repairing
it if CERA will own it by the end
of the year,
She hoped CERA would recon-

Ms Pearson would be speaking

when it would consider whether to
fund further investigations at a
cost of $170,000.
ON PARADE: Ross Bayliss
will ferry the medallists along
the parade route tomorrow.
By ABBIE NAPIER
The spotlight will be on Ross Bay-
liss and his big red bus on Friday
when he chauffeurs 100 returning
Olympians through the city.
The ANZ Olympic Team Wel-
come Home parade kicks off at
noon tomorrow but before anyone
catches a glimpse of the athletes,
Mr Bayliss will be ushering them
aboard two 1960s Routemaster
It should be a good day, he
said. We checked the route on
Monday to make sure there
weren t any low-hanging bran-
ches. We can t have our Olympi-
ans being whacked in the face.
Mr Bayliss will drive the open-
top bus, provided by Hassle-free
Tours, from which the medallists
will be able to wave to the crowds.
The journey was expected to
take 30 to 40 minutes with a few
slow drives past local schools on
Mr Bayliss said for safety reas-
ons he predicted the athletes
would only be able to stand when
the bus was stationary.
Despite all eyes and the nation s
television cameras being on him,
he was not yet nervous.
I haven t thought too much
about it, he said. It s nice to
have some celebrity moments at
His children were jealous of his
close proximity to the nation s
heroes but he would not be asking
for autographs, choosing to
remain the professional driver.
I do want to have a good look at
that chap s [rower Eric Murray]
moustache though, he said.
See Pg 2 for parade schedule.
