Four friends gather around a table in a
local café. They are there most weeks and
you can recognize them by the infectious
laughter that emanates from their table
when they are together. If you got to know
them you would discover that life hasn't
been a bed of roses for any of them. Recent
years have been filled with heartache and
loss. One is recently widowed, another has
an ongoing battle with cancer. A third has
lost their home following the earthquakes
and is still having insurance hassles, while
the fourth has macular degeneration and is
unable to drive or see clearly any more. All
of them have good reason to feel aggrieved,
but instead they have discovered the
healing power of laughter.
Shared laughter is a gift, a holy antidote to
the challenges and trials of life. It somehow
lightens the burdens and makes us all feel
better and lifts our spirits. Other enjoy
keeping company with people who have a
sense of fun.
Perhaps God created humour as a way
to decrease stress and build community.
When fear and discouragement knock
at your door laughter can be the best
medicine. Somehow the waves that were
threatening to sink your boat are no longer
so threatening. Lighten up. Keep laughing
until your last breath.
Know that laughter is
a holy activity.
