KENNETT CRAFTED Jewels will
officially open its contemporary new
store in the Sydenham Quarter next
Wednesday. It is a far cry from the
traditional store, Kennett's Jewellers
in High Street, which was demol-
ished last year -- ending 131 years of
trading on the site.
It is the oldest family owned and
operated jeweller in Christchurch.
The family's collection of old pho-
tos include probably the earliest
image -- a shot from 1880 with crates
from Lyttelton sitting outside the
The business had been pretty
much on hold as the family spent the
best part of the last 18 months work-
ing from home, before finding the
site in Colombo Street and sharing
with Donnell Jewellers.
Like many businesses in limbo, the
hiatus has not been easy but closing
was never an option.
Donnell has since moved out and
the premises has now become Ken-
nett Crafted Jewels.
The name is embedded in Christ-
Tony Kennett's grandfather star-
ted the business in 1880. His father
was born in a back room of the his-
toric premises in 1889, and lived
above the original premises in High
Tony, now retired (but still fixing
clocks in his home workshop) has
handed the reins to his daughter
Anne Kennett, now the manager of
the edgy new store and the first
woman in the Kennett family to
manage the business.
Her tenure marks four generations
Ms Kennett came up with the
design concept of the new shop -- at
482 Colombo St -- with a new logo,
new name and contemporary interior
design poised to capture the imagin-

The shop has evolved from an
older-style jewellery store to an
avant-garde operation focussing on
bridal and designer jewellery. The
women's rings are designed by Ms
Kennett. New Zealand designers Boh
Runga, Lisa Hoskins, Steam Punk
and Jo Luping are also showcased.
Kennett's suppliers and tradesmen
are all local operators.
