TWELVE ALLENVALE School
students were chasing bites at
the Groynes on Tuesday.
The children, who all have
disabilities, looked to hook the
incentive to give every child a
chance to fish.
North Canterbury Fish &
Game field officer Steve Terry
said it was a unique opportunity
for some of the children to
Some of them, it s their first
time fishing, so it s great to be
able to provide them with that
Mr Terry said the chance to
put smiles on faces was a posi-
tive experience for all involved.
Three hundred 2-year-old sal-
mon were released into the fish-
ing lakes at The Groynes before
Allenvale School s visit, includ-
ing 100 the night before.
The 700-gram salmon were
donated by Salmon Smolt NZ
Company manager Karl
French said it was rewarding to
see the children smiling.
It s great to see kids catching
their first fish.
Mr French said Fish & Game
did a fantastic job opening up
the opportunity to schools.
The Complete Angler, Ballin-
ger s Hunting and Fishing, The
Angler s Loft and Hamills each
sponsored three sets of fishing
rods, so the children or schools
did not have to supply anything.
North Canterbury Fish &
Game staff and volunteers gave
the students one-on-one tuition
with their fishing -- then showed
them how to clean and cook
Apart from catching the sal-
mon, the most popular part for
the children was sizzling their
efforts on the barbecue.
