The West Coast, or ''the Coast'' as
people who live there call it, is a wild
place of rivers and rain forests,
glaciers and geological treasures.
Whether seeking relaxation for
your summer holiday in New
Zealand's green landscapes, or
thrilling action, the Coast has it all.
Greymouth is the largest town
and other main centres include
Westport, Hokitika, Fox Glacier,
Franz Josef Glacier and Haast.
In a region never more than 50km
wide but stretching down the South
Island there are only 31,000 people.
Explore the rich environmental

The pancake rocks and blowholes

The Coast is New Zealand's only
source of greenstone (pounamu).
In Hokitika and Greymouth you
can take a tour and watch the
greenstone carvers at work.
While there, visit the Hokitika
Market, which has been operating
for six years and is acknowledged as
the best market on the Coast.
Situated beside the iSite, it is held
on fine Saturdays from Labour
Weekend to the end of April and is
a good place to talk to people about
their products and environment.

on the TranzAlpine.
Whether it's the
initial journey across
Plains through small
towns like Darfield or Sheffield, or
the climb into the mountains
towards Arthur's Pass, the scenery is
nothing short of breathtaking.
And that's only the start. The
second half of the journey is the
descent towards the West Coast
through lush native forests until
emerging on the edge of the
Tasman Sea. In summer, the trip is
enthralling, in winter it is magical,

The TranzAlpine has just turned
25 years old and has new, state-of-
the-art carriages. The interiors have
an inimitable New Zealand feel with
extensive use of wood panelling,

Whatever you decide to do there
-- the wildest side of New Zealand,
the West Coast, has the power to
touch your soul.
