Fatal: Emergency crews at the scene where a cyclist was killed in a crash with an
SUV on the Wainoni/Breezes roads intersection last Wednesday morning.

SUPERCYCLE ROUTES -- likened
to a cycleway you can drive on'' --
will ease the tension between cyclists
and other traffic on busy roads, Cr
Aaron Keown says.
They are one of the design options
in the council's three-year draft plan.
Routes have been selected but
detailed designs have not been done.
Mr Keown, a commuter cyclist and
council representative on the trans-
port agency's regional transport com-
mittee, said last week's two cycling
fatalities in Aranui in four days
within a block of each other was a
sad indictment of road behaviour.
He had asked the agency at its
regional meeting in March why
cyclists had been omitted from its
Drive Social television campaign.
Cyclists are people too. Drivers
need to understand that the cyclist
next to them is not protected by a
metal frame and glass wall.
If you hurt or kill them, that is a
son or daughter, mother or father,
not just a cyclist.
Every motorist should applaud
cyclists for making driving easier
because it means fewer cars on the
road,'' he said.
Putting cyclists on busy, main
roads made no sense.
Supercycle routes would allow
other traffic freer passage on parallel
routes without cycle lanes but which
cyclists could also use if necessary.
Colombo St north of the Square is
marked in the draft plan as one of 14
super cycleway routes which could
carry a 30kmh speed limit. This
would be routed to Papanui via
Edgeware, Trafalgar St, Rutland St
and Grassmere St.
Motorists could opt for Manchester
St north which runs parallel with no
marked cycle lanes.
In 2008, Mr Keown said cycleways
should be routed on parallel roads
and that bad road design was caus-
ing unnecessary stress to motorists.
As a cyclist I believe you should
be acting like the rabbit in the
jungle, meaning almost everything
else is out to get you. You've got to
protect yourself by your own wits.
Never rely on that white line. It's
just a guide.''
Likewise, helmets and high-viz
vests provided no guarantee.
Mayor Bob Parker urged councillors
to make cycle safety a priority in the
three-year draft plan.
