As the impending announcements from the
Minister re the fate of Chisnallwood looms, I
liken the feeling to that of drifting around in the
sea in a boat with no motor or sail.
After having worked together as a community
to recover as best as we could from the events
of February 11th, and then the subsequent
announcements of September 13th, it almost
seems ironical that we now have no control of
our destiny other than to await the decisions
from people some of whom would only know
Chisnallwood as a place on the map.
Reflecting on the last two years and
particularly on the period since September 13,
it is still hard to believe that Chisnallwood is on
the list for proposed closure, however that is
the reality of the situation.
Our submission to the Minister is on the school
website and includes the research undertaken
by professional company Research First.
This analysis is statistically valid and not
surprisingly out-rightly rejects the Government
proposal to close Chisnallwood.
Amidst all this however, the school has
functioned as normal with Chisnallwood
students taking part in all their endeavours as
to be expected.
Particularly pleasing is to see the re-
establishment of our International programme.
Currently we have 42 students from Thailand
with us all adding to the richness of the
community we call Chisnallwood.
As this term draws to an end I wish to
acknowledge the efforts of all students
and staff and also wish to thank the Board
and PTA, who along with the parents and
caregivers, provide the essence of what this
school is about.
With best wishes to you all.
Introducing Our Head Prefects 2013
Rod Ching 'Welcome to Chisnallwood to all new
students. The 2013 year is off to a great start and I wish
everyone a successful year'
Grace Rowland 'Welcome to 2013 and I wish all
students, their parents and guardians a really great
The Year 7 Orton-Bradley experience has been
completed and Breanna Moore Keiran Sullivan and
Matt Dawson from Room 1 had these things to say.
'We enjoyed the challenges we were given because
they pushed us outside our comfort zone'.
The orienteering was cool because you got the chance
to get to scramble through the bush and get wet in the
creek. The stinging nettle was not pleasant.
The Tutors Jonny and Matt were cool
The low ropes and blind fold activities challenged our
confidence and developed
our co-operation skills.
Overall it was a beautiful

our student teacher Ms
McKelvey and the parents
who came to help make
this a really worthwhile
experience for us.
The first of the two annual Sail Camps has been
completed. Twenty-four students from Year 7 and 8 had
the opportunity under the command of Mr Richardson
to hone their sailing skills using the school owned
yachts from Takamatua.
The sailing this year was out of the Akaroa Yacht Club
and this provided extra challenges over Takamatua
Bay including negotiating the various cruise ships
that now frequent the harbour. Chisnallwood is lucky
that we have in Mr Richardson a teacher who has a
Yachting New Zealand Sailing Club Certificate and we
also have a group of dedicated parents who help out,
many who have been on numerous camps. The school
wishes to thank all those who have made this biennial
event such a success.
CHALLENGE THE MARGINS OF TIME AND EXPLORE WHAT IS BEYOND
TO PROVIDE A LEARNING ENVIRONMENT THAT RECOGNISES INDIVIDUAL NEEDS AND ENCOURAGES STUDENTS
TO DEVELOP TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
TO DEVELOP STUDENTS WHO ARE CONFIDENT AND COLLABORATIVE, STRONG IN LITERACY AND NUMERACY,
DEEP THINKERS, PURPOSEFUL, PRODUCTIVE AND ABLE TO LIVE THE SCHOOL VALUES.
RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY, RESILIENCE, RELATIONSHIPS.
