• Preheat the oven to 160C. Line the base and long sides of a 900g/2lb
loaf tin with greaseproof paper, buttering the tin and paper.
• Tip the flour, cinnamon, butter, sugar, 2 tablespoons of the honey
and the eggs into a large mixing bowl. Mash the bananas and chop
the dates (kitchen scissors are easiest for this) and add to the bowl.
Beat the mixture for 2-3 minutes, using a wooden spoon or hand-held
mixer, until well blended.
• Spoon into the prepared tin and level the top. Scatter the walnut pieces
over. Bake for 1 hour, then lightly press the top -- it will feel firm
if cooked. If not, bake for a further 10 minutes.
• Cool for 15 minutes, then lift out of the tin using the paper.
When cold, drizzle the remaining honey over. Cut into thick slices.
225g self-raising flour
½ tsp ground cinnamon 175g softened butter 100g brown sugar

Crystal shop in new home
Back in business: Glen and Deryn Tregurtha are pleased to have
found the ideal location to re-open their business, The Crystal People,
which lost its premises in the February 2011 earthquake.
Two years spent searching for
new premises to re-open a well-
known local crystal shop has
brought a positive outcome for
The Crystal People.
Co-owner Glen Tregurtha says
the new space, at 12c Main
North Rd, Papanui, is much
larger than the old, earthquake-
damaged store and is the
perfect environment in which to
display the beautiful treasures
for which The Crystal People
have become renowned.
''We now have a much larger
range, displayed in a more
spacious and relaxing setting.
All our searching paid off -- we
really love the bright, sunny
space we've found. It even has a
customer carpark,'' Glen says.
''We also now have a
dedicated space for psychic
readings in-store, offering
people support and guidance

The Crystal People first
opened its doors in Christchurch
in 2007, and the shop fast
became a favourite destination
for avid rock-hounds and
seekers of personal develop-
ment and metaphysical goods.
The new shop is quickly
following in these footsteps.
''Whatever their reason for
visiting, we welcome the
opportunity to talk about the
crystals, fossils and metaphysical
items that we have unearthed,''
Along with the core product
range of crystals, minerals,
jewellery, rocks and fossils, the
shop stocks Himalayan crystal
salt lamps, books, incense,
pendulums, amber teething
necklaces, and more.
Glen traces his interest in
crystals back more than 25 years
when, on a holiday in the North
Island, he bought a small piece
of amethyst. His buying and
collecting continued, and six
years later, at the age of 12, he
began selling crystals, with a

Starting out with just a few
items on a table, he and Deryn
gradually built up an impressive
range and equally impressive
reach, selling their wares at
markets and shows up and
down the South Island.
''We now have one of the
country's most extensive ranges
of crystals and minerals,
including some very rare
pieces,'' he says.
''We've become known in
Christchurch for our warm and
friendly service, offering people
insight and advice for their
