Camera repairs an easy fix for
John Gurr and Richard Thompson share a chuckle
as they recall starting their camera repair business,
Fototech, on April Fools' Day in 1990. Richard says
they'd both been looking for an opportunity to be self-
employed when the Pentax repair opportunity came
about and, ''it just seemed like perfect timing.''
John describes his fascination with their work as
simply: ''I like fixing things and have done since I
was a kid.'' Richard's excuse? '' I left university not
knowing what I wanted to do. I'd bought a camera
and it wasn't working properly, so I decided to use my
knowledge of electronics and set about fixing it.''
Initially they were solely dedicated to the Pentax
work as the local authorised repair specialists. Then
to meet camera shops' and customers' needs, they
expanded the range of models they could repair.
Now they have more than 70 years' experience
between them and are capable of fixing a full range
of digital SLR and compact cameras, as well as 35
mm, medium and large format film equipment ''from
Box Brownies to the Pentax 67II and everything in
Today, 95% of the clients seeking the skills of

''Most issues can be fixed,'' says John ''and because
of our experience, we're confident dismantling
and repairing assemblies other technicians may
suggest need a whole new part.'' In addition, the

Fototech are also experts at repairing precious
heirloom cameras from Rollei TLRs to Bronica,

directly or taken into camera shops with a request to
send to Fototech.
