So the Minister of Finance can

the big corporates at Tiwai
The same Minister of Finance
who used the budget to cut
welfare benefits and who wanted
to tax paper boys so he could
balance his precious budget.
In fact it s the same Minister of
Finance who finds $46m (of my
money and yours) to support the
oil and gas industries. (Figures
from the WWF report.)
These are some of the biggest
and most profitable of the global
corporates yet our Government
subsidises them with a cash
handout year after year.

too fear the response of the land to
the Marriage Amendment Act.
Loose research shows that the

Mt Ngauruhoe into regular
eruptions for two to three years,
while the great snowstorm in
response to the initial readings of
the 1992 Electricity Act were
surely signs of impending doom.
Parliament should listen to the
land, perhaps more than it listens

Student leader stands
for city council
Canterbury University students' association
president Erin Jackson intends to stand for the city
council's Spreydon-Heathcote ward in the local
body elections in October. Ms Jackson, 24, who
has a double degree in law and arts, says she
made the decision after talking with peers on the
need to bring fresh ideas to council. She is also a
trustee of the Christchurch Arts Centre Trust board
and student representative on the University
Council. After considering life as a young lawyer in
Wellington, she decided Christchurch was where
she wanted to be. She wants to get people
''talking about things'' that will make Christchurch
different in the future, and represent the youth
voice of the city. Her father is former Hurunui
District mayor Garry Jackson.
Western Australia air link
More than 100 Western Australian travel agents
have been learning what Christchurch has to offer
ahead of the start of a new direct air link between
the city and Perth. From December 4 to April 26 Air
New Zealand will be operating a direct service
twice a week. If the Christchurch-Perth flights
prove popular the service will become permanent.
To help promote the new service and to give
Western Australian travel agents a broader picture
of the city and the South Island, a celebration and
training event was held in Perth this week.
